On the Job Training

In the recent times organization have moved away from proper training period for new entrant to "on the job training". There are many reasons which can be attributed to this movement.

In today era where things are fast and furious, it's evident that the organization are also focused on faster result and therefore places the resource towards achieving the defined results, in which new entrant undergoing "On job Training (OJT)" is one of them.

A new entrant is one who is high on energy / enthusiasm but low on experience and knowledge. Therefore, they are the most absorbent category of employees, who absorb anything which is thrown at them. This is same as a child who is keen on learning and is very observant. Therefore, it is best comparison to deduct some observations out of this comparison and new process of OJT.

Lets question the regular practice of teaching a kid :

What happens when this process is not followed and start teaching kid with formation of words / phrases skipping the first few process of teaching alphabets / words  ?

The answer to this question would be that with different capability and learning capacity of child, we would have children with different understandings. Now try this :

你叫什麼名字 ?

Can you read the above ? If you are not aware of Chinese and its alphabets you cannot, simply because you are unaware.

Isn't this the same process being followed in organizations with "On the Job Training" ? Therefore it is important for an organization to train / educate / teach / prepare the employees for the roles they would taking over, irrespective of years of experience.

Many who join an organization, would not have seen the product they are working / part of and therefore unable to contribute towards the minute value which they could add. This is a big loss to the organization which they are unable to quantify in numbers.

These are "My Thoughts" on "On Job training", which can be faster way of getting people onboard, but it is never an effective way !

  1. I agree with your point to an extent and disagree too. It is important to teach the new joinees the tools required on the job. Be it software or excel sheet. But, to handle a situation it's important to put them in a situation. It's hard to placate a situation where in they have to use these tools to solve the problem. It can only be done hands on. Managers need to take full responsibility for the mistakes or make sure they don't do any mistakes during this training period.
