Cauvery Dispute !! Possible solution - My Thoughts

The Karnataka state erupted with rage with the Supreme Court passing verdict on Cauvery river to release 15TMC water to Tamil Nadu. As Tamil Nadu rejoiced this verdict the people of Karnataka erupted with rage and staged a state wide protest on Sept9th, 2016 with mixed response especially from the IT companies, which were later forced to close down.

Rather bringing in state owned issues, it's important to look at this issue more holistically and from National perspective.



Water is one of the most important element, necessary for the survival of human beings. Therefore priority should always be for "DRINKING / BASIC REQUIREMENTS", then for other purposes. But at the same time the life of many are dependent on the crops. Therefore, this would be never ending issue if not solved with the interference of a third party in this topic. 

From my basic level of understanding and some common sense have proposed the below : 


For an instance let's forget units and consider the above example : 

Case 1 : Water Available
With 10,000 water available, it's first important to serve the people dependent on Kaveri for drinking purpose. A minimum requirement of water per person needs to be calculated and have arrived at figure 3 in this example (this is most critical to calculate and can be easily done with random sampling across all states).  Therefore, estimating the population from all 4 states, the water is first distributed to these states. (2,700 in above shown example) . 

Thus around 7,300 is left for other purposes, mainly irrigation. Now, consider the total irrigation area around Kaveri basin and thus distribute water accordingly. In above example thus water gets divided based on irrigation land / Kaveri basin in all states. 

This is a case where water is available, now let's analyze the same with water scarcity.
Case 2 : Water Scarcity


When there is water scarcity, first drinking/basic requirement and after that with water left to be used for irrigation purpose. It is obvious that this would impact the crops in the areas on Kaveri basin due to lack of water for the same.

This where i propose that the Central Govt. should step in and provide relief to farmers who are hit  by drought. Since this would be the loss of farmer for one season only, the Govt can subsidize / provide relief to cover up the basic costs of the farmer.




Through this we can avoid many un-necessary incidents which could result in loss of public and govt. property. Bandhs which would cause loss to economy of both the states.

These are "My Thoughts" of resolving this long pending topic on Kaveri, ultimately keeping peace and brotherhood in mind of both the states. After all we are all first Indians.

World is being a more competitive place and to retain customers and increase the sales / turnover of an organisation, there are many things a company can plan / strategize. But many times the company plans to achieve these strategies by squeezing the existing resources.
